Question of the Week:
What do you look for when choosing a good modified motor?
it has to have a pink can.......stand-up brushes.......a gold end bell....purple heat sinks............6 turn quint h cut brushes.......3x slotted armature.......oh yeah its got to be fast!
price
I look for a reputation, A thick can, and speed and how cool it stays Chris Heiser
Look at what other people are using and go by that. RC10(!) Rules!
Ball bearings, good brushes, hand wound arm, diamond trued comm, at a price under 50 dollars
I don't buy modifieds that often, because right now I like expert stock classes. Hopefully I will get a major sponsor that will give me motors.
I look for the the magnets being strong. the armature built well, and something that I know will power my associated cars to the limit therefore beating those other cars that never quite do so well. mrT3/B3
I look for strong magnets, good design in armature and can, and definitely one that is efficient with power.
Good value for the dollar. I have all associated buggies and trucks and run trinity speed gem motors for price wise 27.99$ is a steel compared to over 50+$ all the other motors out there. But my friends at my local track are raving about the sonic 2 motors and I might try one. But for now ill stick with my speed gems which I do absolutely fine with when racing against other peoples high dollar motors! Good Luck Racing TAman
Price, large comm and the Reedy name.
Price mostly. I don't think the benefit of hand wound justifies the extra price.
It really depends on the track. The only advice I can offer is to research the area extremely well, because mods are kind of expensive. Maybe talk to some people at your local track and find out which mod they are using just for a starting point. Other things to look at are your batteries capability to handle the motor you pick. You don't want to buy this expensive motor and then have to buy new batteries. Chuck W.
A smooth, large powerband, and a motor that runs cool (like your original Sonics, with the cooling fins inside). Labels that stay on after motor spray. I try to stay away from all the pink and purple coated motors, I like the black cans, although a Blue can might sell well. I like being able to get factory brushes and springs for my motors too, so I make sure I can get those too. Mark Westerfield
A motor for someone who doesn't race often and just does rc for fun. Any low-cost modified will make me happy I guess ;)
HAND WOUND LOW TURNS BALL BEARINGS GOOD BRAND VERY QUICK
Any motor made by reedy, Dustin Davis
Ball bearings, adjustable timing, a reasonable price, and on-road winds.
the word reedy says it all!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good Can designs, balanced diamond trued armatures, good ball bearings, strong magnets Reedy should come out with a blue canned motor to match the factory team stuff
bearings, hand wound, well known
