Questions

What solder do you recommend?

When the reverse dies after 5 seconds, it goes dull green like it's in neutral and reverse does nothing until I run forward (even for a fraction of a second) then I get 5 seconds of reverse again, etc, (forward works normally).

Quantum Competition ESC. My question is, are Schottky Diodes required for all motors or just Modified motors.

How do I set up up my V7.1?

I have just bought the new LRP quantum speedo. In the instruction manual it talks about automatic start. I have tried to activate this function but it does not seem to work.

Do any of the LRP forward/reverse ESCs have a reverse lockout for use in racing situations?

What do the speed control spec terms mean?

Can you tell me what the 4 open pins are used for?

How do I program my LRP v6 speed control?

Does the V7.1 need a receiver pack when running 4 cells?

The problem is that I have full forward and reverse but no brakes. When I try to put the brakes on it goes into reverse automatically with no delay, also the LED lights up in red in reverse and it should not be.

How do you set up the neutral position of your throttle?

Can My IPC SR speed control, which is intended for stock motors, be used with a mod motor?

My son is racing standard/stock motor class in a buggy and is going to upgrade the speed controller. What is the best one to ensure maximum performance?

What kind of capacitors do the Runner Plus Reverse use to suppress the motor?

The Pro Reverse has an on/off switch. I'd prefer to leave this switch set in the on position, and simply plug and unplug the battery to turn the car on and off.

I have a mechanical speed control, and I'm interested in getting an ESC. I want to be able to go in reverse.

I seemed to have misplaced the capacitors that came with my LRP F1 Digital. Can I just run down to the local Radio Shack to get them?

My LRP F1 Power Bullet came with some really poor-fitting heat sinks and I was wondering if I need to use them.

Could you tell me if the V6 will perform as well in 4 cell mod. as in 6 cell stock? Do you need a receiver pack for it to run properly?

Can the Bullet ESC handle dual motors? If so, how many turns with the motors wired in parallel?

How many cells can the LRP V6 handle?

How do you set up the LRP Runner  ESC?

LRP V6 speed control. I was looking at Masami's winning B3 on your site from the Worlds 2WD race and noticed odd looking round things connected to his speed control. What are these?

On Masami's winning B3 motor what looked like some kind of diode but it was different from the ones that I use. I saw all this at http://www.rc10.com/racerhub/races/racereport14.htm.

When we turn on the car, the speed control light stays on but does not flash. We did follow the set up instructions when you turn the switch on, wait 2 seconds, then press set up for 3 seconds. At this point the light does not flash.

I just purchased a used IPC V6 speed control and I don't know how to set it
up (the one button setup).

I was wondering if any of your LRP F1 Reversible series speed controls have a function that allows you to disable the reverse when you are racing. Some other companies' reversible ESCs have that function, and I was wondering if you guys did.

Does the 'LRP V6 stock racer' have a motor limit? Would it be too "punchy" or can the feature be disabled?

I'm getting a buggy with a 6 turn motor. A speed control with reverse would be very nice to have.

Do I SOLDER the motor power wires to the motor?

What are polarity proof connectors?

How do I attach the black and red wires to the battery? How do I use the red wire for the motor and the battery?

Are the heat sinks the blue things?

Can you tell me a more detailed setup of the capacitors, and the Schottky-diode for a racing motor?

Is there a way to reset the AI LRP speed control? It seems to be faster and has more immediate torque in reverse than in forward.

Answers

1 What solder you recommend?

Any 60/40 Rosin core solder will work fine.

2 When the reverse dies after 5 seconds, it goes dull green like it's in neutral and reverse does nothing until I run forward (even for a fraction of a second) then I get 5 seconds of reverse again, etc, (forward works normally).

That is correct, reverse on the LRP Runner only functions for 5 seconds and then it stops.

3 Quantum Competition ESC. My question is, are Schottky Diodes required for all motors or just Modified motors.

They are not required, just suggested. Rather than put one on every motor, mount it in line with the wires going to the motor, then when you change motors you will all ways have it in line. The diode helps to smooth out when you put on the brakes. The silver or white band goes to the positive side of the motor.

4 How do I set up my V7.1?

Setting the LRP speed controls:
1 Turn your radio on and set the throttle to neutral.
2 Turn on the speed control.
3 Push the setup button till the light starts to flash (about 3 to 5 seconds).
4 Once it starts to flash, push the setup button again and then release it. That sets neutral!
5 Now pull the trigger on your radio to full throttle and hold it there while you push and release the setup button.
6 Then push the trigger on your radio to full brakes/reverse and hold it there while you push and release the setup button.
7 You are done, check the operation of both forward and brake/reverse.

5 I have just bought the new LRP quantum speedo. In the instruction manual it talks about automatic start. I have tried to activate this function but it does not seem to work.

Hold your throttle at full brake at least 5 seconds before the start of the race and when you pull the throttle you will have a burst of power. That burst only lasts for a second or so after the start.

6 Do any of the LRP forward/reverse ESCs have a reverse lockout for use in racing situations?

Yes, the Quantum reverse, Super Reverse, Pro Reverse, F1 reverse, F1 Super, and F1 Pro all have the reverse lock out feature. You hold down the setup button while turning on the speed control and that will turn it off if it's on, or on if it's off.

7 What do the speed control spec terms mean?

On-Resistance: 0.0015 - it's how much resistance is in the components of the speed control, how easy the energy moves through the circuit of the speed control.

Rated Current: 80A - If a voltage spike from the motor or batteries backs up into the speed control that is how many amps the speed control can stand before it would be affected electronically.

Max. Current (30 sec.): 40A - the max amps that are sent to the motor for the first 30 seconds.

Cont. Current (5 min.): 30A - same as above but this is the amount that continues, so for the 5 min run you will get an average of 30 amps.

BEC Output Voltage: 5.0V - how much voltage is supplied to the BEC (battery eliminator circuit)

BEC Current (30 sec.): 2.0A - same as above but over the first 30 seconds.

BEC Current (5 min.): 1.2A - the average that is supplied to the BEC over 5 minutes.

PWM Frequency: 2100Hz - could not locate the correct answer for this one.

Adjustable Power Control: yes - this is a current limiting feature; based on which chip and position that you install it, you will get a different feel from the punch, drive ability, and battery efficiency.

Multi protection system: yes - safety features built into the speed control to guard against voltage spikes, thermal overload, cross connection of the battery, and so on.

8 Can you tell me what the 4 open pins are used for?

They are used to plug in the torque limiters. The torque limiters are small square chips you plug into that area. Each chip has a different rating of amps--30, 50, 65, 80, 120. On one corner its point is shaved off. Which corner that notch faces will have a different effect.

Pin orientation of corners:

4 1
3 2

Rating: (1 = least, 4 = most):

# in corner, Punch, Drivablility, Batt. Efficiency
1 1 4 4
2 2 3 3
3 3 2 2
4 4 1 1

9 How do I program my LRP v6 speed control?

You change the programming depending on which way you insert the chip. You don't use software to do it.

10 Does the V7.1 need a receiver pack when running 4 cells?

In some cases of high motor load you may need to use a receiver pack.

11 The problem is that I have full forward and reverse but no brakes. When I try to put the brakes on it goes into reverse automatically with no delay, also the LED lights up in red in reverse and it should not be.

If your speed control is an F1 Pro Reverse, the problem you are having is caused by your setup. Make sure you have the neutral set on your radio before you set the LRP. Then go through the setup procedure again. Make sure the first thing you do is set the neutral in the speed control or you will have difficulties with the rest.

12 How do you set up the neutral position of your throttle?

To set the neutral just push the set up button one more time after you push it for the first time to start the set up. Then pull the throttle back to full throttle and push the setup button once, let the throttle go back to neutral, push the throttle forward and push the setup button again. Let the throttle go back to neutral, and you are done.

13 Can My IPC SR speed control, which is intended for stock motors, be used with a mod motor?

Yes it can, but it has so much bottom end punch that it can burn out the comms on your mod motors. So we would not advise you using it for modified.

14 My son is racing standard/stock motor class in a buggy and is going to upgrade the speed controller. What is the best one to ensure maximum performance?

For stock racing, use the IPC SR ("Stock Racing") servo.

15 What kind of capacitors do the Runner Plus Reverse use to suppress the motor?

#6520; you get 3 for $2.00.

16 The Pro Reverse has an on/off switch. I'd prefer to leave this switch set in the on position, and simply plug and unplug the battery to turn the car on and off.

It could send voltage spikes through the unit. We would suggest not doing this.

17 I have a mechanical speed control, and I'm interested in getting an ESC. I want to be able to go in reverse.

If your radio will switch from forward to reverse, a reverse ESC is all you need.

18 I seemed to have misplaced the capacitors that came with my LRP F1 Digital. Can I just run down to the local Radio Shack to get them?

You can purchase these capacitors at Radio Shack. Ask them for three .01uf capacitors.

19 My LRP F1 Power Bullet came with some really poor-fitting heat sinks and I was wondering if I need to use them.

Under extreme temperature conditions I would run them. But if you are running where it is somewhat cool, then they are not necessary. Another reason to run them would be if you used reverse a lot.

20 Could you tell me if the V6 will perform as well in 4 cell mod. as in 6 cell stock? Do you need a receiver pack for it to run properly?

You will need a receiver pack for racing in 4 cell mod if you decide to go with the V6. I have run it in both and the speed control works great.

21 Can the Bullet ESC handle dual motors? If so, how many turns with the motors wired in parallel?

The LRP Bullet will only handle dual motors as the long as you do not go below two 15 turn motors.

22 How many cells can the LRP V6 handle?

With one 10 turn it can handle up to 12 cells.

23 How do you setup the LRP Runner  ESC?

With a charged battery in the car, press the set up button for a minimum of 3 seconds, the led will start to flash. Press the setup button one more time, then pull the throttle into the full throttle position, push setup one more time, let the throttle go back to neutral, push the throttle to the full brake position, push the set up button one more time and return the throttle to the neutral position. You should be ready now.

24 LRP V6 speed control. I was looking at Masami's winning B3 on your site from the Worlds 2WD race and noticed odd looking round things connected to his speed control. What are these?

I am not sure what is on Masami’s speed control since he is sponsored by GM Racing for speed controls. I looked at the picture on our web site and there are two electrolytic capacitors attached to the speed control. I can only assume they are being used the same as the one that Novak uses on the Cyclone. They are just bigger versions of the capacitors that are normally inside the speed controls (as is the case with LRP).

25 On Masami's winning B3 motor what looked like some kind of diode but it was different from the ones that I use. I saw all this at http://www.rc10.com/racerhub/races/racereport14.htm.

Masami’s motor has two of the larger 15 amp Schottky diodes that Associated sells under the Reedy label. In the LRP package they include a smaller 8 amp Schottky diode.

26 When we turn on the car, the speed control light stays on but does not flash. We did follow the set up instructions when you turn the switch on, wait 2 seconds, then press set up for 3 seconds. At this point the light does not flash.

1. Make sure that your radio adjustments for the throttle and brake are set at 100%.
2. Hold down the setup button to get the speed control into the setup mode.
3. Once both lights are solid, press the setup button till the lights start blinking.
4. Pull full throttle and press the setup button. That will set your high speed.
5. Push full brake then press the setup button and that sets full brake. Now you are ready to run.

27  just purchased a used IPC V6 speed control and I don't know how to set it
up (the one button setup).

1. First make sure all of your transmitter adjustments for your throttle
are set at 100%.
2. Turn on your transmitter then your car.
3. Hold down the button till the light on the speed control changes.
4. Hold down the button till the lights start blinking.
5. Pull full throttle then push down the button on the speed control.
6. Push full brake on the transmitter then push down the button on the speed control.
Now the setup process of setting up the speed control is done and you're ready to run.

28 I was wondering if any of your LRP F1 Reversible series speed controls have a function that allows you to disable the reverse when you are racing. Some other companies' reversible ESCs have that function, and I was wondering if you guys did.

The reverse function is always on but you can turn it down by adjusting it on your radio.

29 Does the 'LRP V6 stock racer' have a motor limit? Would it be too "punchy" or can the feature be disabled?

The SR does not have a motor limit. It would be too punchy to race in modified class. It can not be disabled. The speed control delivers quicker acceleration than the V6. In stock racing you need all the advantages you can get and this is a big one.

30 I'm getting a buggy with a 6 turn motor. A speed control with reverse would be very nice to have.

If you are looking for a really hot setup try the LRP V7.1 speed control with that motor. This speed control can handle the power but it does not have reverse. No speed control that can handle a 6 turn will be able to have reverse.

31 Do I SOLDER the motor power wires to the motor?

The speed control you purchased is designed for high-end racers. Most of the racers think that connectors cause a loss of power, so they do what is called "hard wire" their motor and batteries. This means they solder both the motor and batteries directly to the leads from the speed control. This is not required, it is just a common thing for serious racers. Now if you are some place where you do not have access to power or you just do not want to waste your time soldering wires, then you would place connectors onto the ends of your wires for both the motor and battery pack.

32 What are polarity proof connectors?

You can use any connector on the end of the wires that will fit, but with some connectors it is possible to get them mixed up and you could damage your speed control if the wires are reversed. This is why most companies recommend using a connector that will prevent the chance of incorrect wiring (polarity proof connectors). Common plugs used in this hobby for this are Lightspeed connectors or the Dean’s Ultra plug. When installed correctly they prevent accidental reversing of power and ground leads.

33 How do I attach the black and red wires to the battery? How do I use the red wire for the motor and the battery?

The IPC is a three wire system. This means you will use the red wire for both the battery positive and the motor positive. You do this by cutting the red wire (think of it is making a "Y" connection) and splicing the wire with a solder connection so the wire can reach the other location.

34 Are the heat sinks the blue things?

The blue anodized aluminum finned blocks are the heat sinks.

35 Can you tell me a more detailed setup of the capacitors, and the Schottky-diode for a racing motor?

The capacitors are nothing but noise filters for the motor to help keep the motor from causing interference with the rest of the radio system.
The Schottky diode is another filter type of device which helps to keep the motor commutator arcing down, which will in turn keep the speed control and motor cooler. This results in improved efficiency and greater component life. The white band on the diode always gets soldered to the positive side.

36 Is there a way to reset the AI LRP speed control? It seems to be faster and has more immediate torque in reverse than in forward.

The speed control resets itself every time you turn it on.
